What Every Dog Owner Should Know Before Saying Yes to a Board & Train Program
You love your dog. You want them to thrive, to feel safe, and to come when you call because they trust you. That’s why a Board & Train program can sound so appealing—a chance to give your dog the skills they need for a happy life with you.
But here’s something most owners don’t realize: the Board & Train industry is unregulated. There are no universal standards or required licenses, which means anyone can call themselves a trainer—even without formal education or proven methods. When it comes to your dog’s safety and well-being, that lack of oversight matters.
The Hidden Risks of At-Home Board & Train Services
Recently, we’ve seen more “pop-up” Board & Train programs run out of private homes. While some may mean well, there are serious risks to consider when you’re entrusting someone with your best friend:
- No regulatory standards. Without oversight, it’s hard to know if a trainer truly has the skills and experience they claim.
- Unknown methods. Are they using positive reinforcement or harsh aversive techniques? You may not find out until it’s too late.
- Limited environment and socialization. A single home setting often lacks exposure to real-world situations or structured interactions with other dogs and people.
- Safety concerns. Is the space insured? Are there emergency protocols? How are multiple dogs managed to keep everyone safe?
Insurance: A Question Every Dog Owner Must Ask
Here’s something many people don’t realize: homeowner’s insurance does NOT cover a business. If a Board & Train is being run out of a home and a dog escapes, bites, or causes damage, the homeowner’s policy won’t protect you—or your dog.
If the trainer doesn’t carry a proper business liability policy, you, the dog owner, can be held financially and legally responsible.
Always ask: “Are you insured?”
Ask to see a certificate of insurance. This is not being pushy—it’s protecting your dog and yourself.
If they don’t have business liability insurance, don’t leave your dog there.
These rules exist for a reason. If a problem arises and there’s no coverage, everyone involved is at risk—including you.
Local Law Matters: Kent County Requirements
If you’re in Kent County, there’s another critical safeguard: if someone is boarding dogs overnight for money, they must be permitted, even for just one dog. And if they own more than four dogs, a permit is also required.
Anyone boarding dogs overnight should be able to show you their county permit.
If they can’t, they’re operating illegally.
Permits ensure at least a basic level of oversight for the safety of your dog and the community.
5 Questions to Ask Before Choosing a Board & Train Program
Your dog depends on you to make choices that protect their safety and their heart. Before you commit to any Board & Train service, take the time to ask:
- What are your credentials and experience?
Look for certified trainers with a proven track record in positive, science-based methods. - What training methods do you use?
Make sure their philosophy aligns with humane, positive reinforcement techniques. - Can I tour your facility?
Transparency is key. Reputable programs welcome you to see the space and meet the trainers. - What safety measures are in place?
Ask about insurance, emergency protocols, and dog handling policies. - How do you involve me in the training?
Great programs provide owner education and follow-up, so your dog’s progress lasts at home. - Do you have references?
Ask for the name, phone number, and email of other clients? If they are reluctant to provide references, don’t leave your dog there.
